For the first several weeks a developing embryo follows a “female blueprint,” from reproductive organs to nipples meaning we all start life out as girls!

Only after about 60 days does the hormone testosterone kick in (for those of us with a Y chromosome), changing the genetic activity of cells in the genitals and brain. This means the nipples are left over from when we were female for 60 days.
