mmm. It can be stressful, especially if things go wrong. You may also need to work rather long hours for some time. I have noticed my hours recently have been creeping up and up. Some people like the challenge and as long as you can relax when you aren’t working it’s not so bad.

Personally knowing I have worked hard makes it even better when I get good results. But there are some days I get a little down when nothing works.

I agree with Tom on this one – it can definitely be frustrating when things go wrong, or when you don’t get a result that you’d really been hoping for. Some days it seems like nothing goes right! Luckily that doesn’t happen too often, and I enjoy trying to solve the problem and work out why that thing has gone wrong (and how I can fix it!) 🙂 All the hard work is worth it when you finally get something working the way it should!

Honestly, it’s not the best paying job out there so if you’re looking to be a millonaire you have to discover something amazing that’ll give you a patent or run a science business. I love it so it good for me.

I think, if I’m being totally honest, one of the downfalls of my job is how dangerous it is. I work with complexes that can mutate my genes and cause cancer. The compounds can be hazardous and toxic. Now, if they are handled correctly (lab coat, lab goggles, gloves) and in a fume hood then it really isn’t a problem – which is how I can do my job day to day without dying (!) – but if I want to have kids I can’t work in the lab whilst I’m pregnant so it means finding another job whilst I do that and then returning to my current job after a career break.
