Our brain doesn’t actually rest too much when we’re asleep! As you say, the brain is responsible for all our most basic functions, like breathing, while we’re asleep, so it could never rest completely. Actually, studies have suggested that our brains are actually pretty busy when we’re asleep. Sleeping allows the brain to sort through lots of the information it has received during the day, and to make our new memories stronger – this might be why we have dreams at night . That’s why it’s important that we sleep and rest, even though our brains don’t switch off.
