I think, although this is way outside my area of expertise, that it will take hundreds and hundreds of years! First we have to figure out how to get there safely and come home again.

Some people called Mars One want to get there in 2024. Most space scientists don’t think that will work. The best estimate I have head comes from Elon Musk and his company SpaceX who work with NASA and scientists to build better rockets. He believes it will be done within our lifetimes, it’s his life goal and he is a pretty driven man. But that is an outpost not a city.

My best guess 30-40 years before a man (or woman) on Mars. Maybe just less than 100 before we have town or something bigger than just a few shelters.

I’ll say that’s not going to be possible because first and foremost the air and chemicals in it has to be right so we can breathe safely. We’re still battling with pollutants on earth and I don’t see how we can change the atmosphere on a whole planet. But who knows with all the wondeful inventions scientists keep coming up with. Guess it’ll just not be in our life time
