I’m a scientist but I’m also a practising Christian so I believe that God made the world, maybe not in seven days, but I believe that He made the Earth and the stars and the animals and the plants etc. I don’t dis-believe Big Bang Theory, I’m happy to believe that the Universe was created from a large explosion, I just think that God was the creator of that explosion.

The currently scientifically accepted idea is that the Earth formed (accreted is the fancy word) by lots of dust and gas sticking together just after the Sun formed. Over time these lumps would get bigger and bigger and eventually form Earth. During this time when the earth was smaller than it is today and really hot (most of the Earth was still molten) another such protoplanet called Theia crashed into the Earth and mixed with it. This is how the Moon formed.

The first conferences I went to as a PhD student was on how the Moon formed. Most people agree on the ‘Giant Impact Theory’ I give above but the details are still being debated even now!
