We use puzzles because we can make them easier for young children, and harder for older children and adults, but we can still compare results between different age groups which is very important. They’re also fun for young children to do, and they’ll be used to doing puzzles at home or at school, so we don’t have to spend a long time teaching the children what to do (otherwise they would get bored!) We track the movements of the children’s eyes using a special camera whilst they watch a video of someone doing a puzzle, and it helps to tell us what things are most important for them to look at when they learn something new.

The type of puzzles we use are called tangram puzzles, and they look like these: http://www.tangram-channel.com/tangram-puzzles/
